Here’s something new, a list of movies that I think are worth putting on your entertainment shelf. All I ask is this: don’t just watch for the entertainment quality. I want you to think about the messages they are conveying. Analyze not only the messages behind the frames, but also the characterization of the actors and actresses. There are always cool guys in cool movies. Be the man.
Food for Thought
The Matrix (First movie only)
It’s my opinion that the latter two movies in the Matrix Trilogy ruined the whole thing, but I still stand by my conviction that the first of the movies is a work of art.
Existential themes. Religious tones. Mind over matter… seeing the “matrix,” that is, seeing what is invisible, but is still there…
V for Vendetta
This film I enjoyed very much, and I include here because it includes themes and messages that very much have to do with our aims and goals here. Themes include: fear of authority, the danger of inaction, and the necessity to stand up for what is right.
Fight Club
The movie that probably most closely represents what we are about. Our problems are similar. Our solution, fortunately, is more constructive than in the movie. Themes: the role of men in society. Philosophical messages. Also, pay attention to Brad Pitt’s character in the movie.
Purely for Character Analysis
Casino Royale
I include this film because Daniel Craig’s characterization of Bond is simply badass. This is one of the men you need to study if you want to get good with women.
Iron Man
Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark shows you don’t have to be a James Bond to get the girls. And it also shows that girls find a variety of male character traits attractive. You do not have to be this character or that character to come out ahead.
The above is just a short list. Once again I ask you to watch the movies not for their entertainment value, but for any constructive messages you can apply to our objectives.
Here is my ultra-condensed analysis of the first three films:
The Matrix – The world is a giant system of interaction, and within it the nature of these interactions can be understood on a certain level. Also, you are a part of the interactions, but that does not mean you have no control over your own actions. Don’t just “think” about doing something, go out and do it.
V for Vendetta – Fear is a destructive emotion. Most of you reading this would be working a job under your superiors, office jobs, retail, whatever. There is fear of authority. And with the current economic situation, you fear for your finances and stability. Then there is that danger of inaction; when you stand idly by as evil occurs, you are guilty. Be a man and do the right thing. (With apologies to Russell Peters)
Fight Club – Similar themes as above, the unnamed narrative character works a dead end office job and lives out his nice comfortable pattern; we can see he is getting nowhere. Find a pattern that works. There is a quote: “We are a generation of men raised by women”. My interpretation is that the current society has turned us into pussies. We are afraid of so much; instability, authority, strangers, rejection.
These are just my interpretations. But you yourself should go through and think about these for a moment. Where does all of this fit with you?
