Still having trouble figuring out how to dress yourself? Don’t feel too bad; shopping for clothes isn’t exactly most men’s favorite way to spend an afternoon. But it is a skill you have to learn; women put a lot of stock in clothes, and if yours aren’t up to par, you’re going to have a much harder time getting their attention.
But shopping for guys’ clothes isn’t easy, especially when you’re first starting to take it seriously. Advertisements and fashion magazines hit us with the latest–and most expensive–styles, which are way beyond most of our budgets. And most clothing stores have so many mind-boggling options that you could easily waste several hours trying to pick out a wardrobe. So what’s a guy to do?
Recruit a specialist–get advice from a woman!
From a very young age, little girls are conditioned by society to be obsessed with appearance. They’re expected to play dress-up, to play with makeup, and generally to pay attention to people’s clothes and the way they look. The trend grows during high school and young adulthood, when they face pressure to be skinny, to wear the “right” kinds of clothes, and to date attractive boys as well. These expectations are reinforced throughout women’s lives, to the point that it becomes a subconscious infatuation, integrally melded with their personalities.
Sad? Maybe. But why cry about it when you can take advantage of it? The fact is that these circumstances make women perfect as personal shopping guides. Tradition and consumer culture have bred them as experts–not just in women’s clothes, but in guys’ too. The best advice you can get on shopping for guys’ clothes is likely to come from a woman.
Try this out sometime. Approach a woman–the type you’d be interested in, and who dresses accordingly–and ask her for advice on shopping for clothes. Almost all women are more than happy to give you leads on the stores you should check out, the style of clothes you should choose, and anything else you could be wondering about. Many of them could, quite literally, talk for hours on the subject. And if they’re so eager to help, why stop with just asking for advice?
Get a woman to go shopping with you
Many women love to shop for men. Maybe it reminds them of dressing up dolls when they were younger, maybe it gives them a challenging new outlet for their fashion talents. Who knows. But most of them will be glad to help you pick out clothes–and if you’ve got a chance to make a woman happy, shouldn’t you take it?
Not only can you learn a lot about fashion and find some suave new duds by shopping with a woman, it also works as a great first date. Shopping–especially with a woman around–will take plenty of time, which you can use to get to know her and put your PUA skills to good use. This works especially well because it’s a non-traditional date; she might not even realize you think of it as a date, which means you’ll be spared a lot of the awkwardness and nervousness that accompanies an old-school date like meeting over coffee. And it’s an awesome setup for a second date: after she finishes decking you out, she’s probably going to want to show you off to all of her friends.
It’s only natural: when you want to know something, ask someone who knows. Women know shopping. Women know clothes. They even know how to shop for guys’ clothes. Having a woman help you navigate the maze of mens’ apparel is a very smart move–and a great chance to put the rest of your moves into play, as well.
