Tips on How to Keep Conversation Going and Avoid Silence in Your First Date

A pregnant silence is can ruin your date. Now that you’ve started a decent conversation with your date, you realize that you are running out of things to say and you don’t want that lull in the conversation. You now scramble for ways on how to keep the conversation going.

Among the many things you should remember in dates is to avoid silence in dates. Nothing can be more awkward and embarrassing as that. It doesn’t matter how fancy a restaurant is or how pretty the bouquet of flowers you’ve given her because what she will remember most about the date is your conversation.

So to keep your date from going down the hill, here are some few tips on how to keep your conversation interesting.

Watch the news before you leave

The news is one common ground for most people. If you feel awkward at first, you can talk about current events just to break the ice. You may start with “I can’t believe the awful storm that hit the ___ area,” or “it’s awesome that the health bill has finally been passed.”

Be aware of your surroundings; be aware of her

When you run out of things to say, try to get her to talk about how good her hair or dress looks. She’s most certain to talk about it. Find something about her to talk about. Or talk about how wonderful the place you are in. That should keep the conversation from going dull.

Refrain from asking closed questions

Closed questions are those answerable only by “yes” or “no.” These will not get you anywhere. The questions you need to ask are open questions—those that would get them to talk more about themselves and how they think of certain things lengthily.

Look for clues in the conversation and take advantage of them

When you have no idea what you’re going to say next, it pays to listen very well to your date. Look for clues in what she’s saying and use that to keep the conversation going. If she says she’s from Florida and has only been here for weeks, you can ask her these things: (1) Are you planning to stay here for good? (2) What kind of work do you do? Was it the reason why you moved here? (3) Is it true that Florida is a great place to live? How’s life different there?

Remember to not sound like you’re interrogating

Be sincere and truly interested in getting to know her. When you ask questions, don’t sound like a police officer interrogating a criminal. She will not like it.

There are tons of ways on how to keep your conversation going and the date interesting. The main thing you have to remember is to be confident, have fun, and be sincere in getting to know your date. And oh, having some questions in handy would also help a lot.
