Do I Have To Lie To Be Cocky Funny?

You may have noticed that cocky comedy routines tend to involve a fair number of, shall we say, half-truths.  When we suggest you tell girls that you’re a secret agent or a presidential bodyguard, we’re pretty certain that you aren’t.  Which presents something of an ethical quandary:  When we tell you to use cocky comedy, are we telling you to lie to impress women?

Many guys wonder if cocky comedy is all about lying, and it’s not hard to see why…especially when we come right out and admit that it involves saying a lot of things that aren’t true.  But is this really the same thing as lying?  The short answer is no.  The long answer…well, read on.

Real cocky comedy is about joking–not lying

And there is a difference between a joke and a lie.  You see, lies deceive, while jokes entertain.  Your goal in using real cocky comedy isn’t to make women believe what you’re telling them–especially if it’s something outlandish, like that you’re an astronaut, or a lion tamer.  Not that lines like these won’t be believed by some of your less…er, gifted…ladies, but again, you’re not trying to make them believe it.  The idea behind this kind of cocky comedy is to say something so wild, so unbelievable, that nobody’s going to buy it.  This is what makes it funny, especially if you keep up with it.  And that, my friends, is entertainment.

Put another way, if you’re seriously trying to convince a woman that you’re an astronaut, you’re lying (assuming you’re not actually an astronaut, of course–in which case, I really doubt you need much help getting women anyway).  If you say you’re an astronaut as a joke, and make it funny (by your tone of voice, your attitude, and so on), even if you never explicitly admit that you’re not an astronaut, you’re using cocky comedy.  If you’re lying, you’re eventually going to get caught–and blow your chances in the process.  But if you’re joking, even if the girl ends up believing you, you can always come back by pointing out that it was an obvious joke:  e.g. “Come on, you didn’t really buy that, did you?”  Thus making her feel like a fool, while reasserting your own dominance in the situation.

Cocky comedy and mystery

“Ah ha,” some of you may be thinking, “but part of the reason we’re supposed to use cocky comedy is to keep up the mystery–to keep from giving up too much information about ourselves.  Isn’t that lying?”

Not exactly.  Lying, once more, is all about intentional deceit.  And remember, in using cocky comedy, real cocky comedy, you’re not trying to make them believe what you’re saying–you’re avoiding giving a truthful answer for the time being.  Hence, you’re not lying; think of it more as directing the flow of information.

If you stay involved with a girl over the long term, she’s eventually going to find out the things she’s asking you about.  Evading these answers for the present with cocky comedy just keeps her from finding them all out now.  You’re not giving false answers, hoping she’ll believe them; you’re giving funny answers, and delaying telling the truth until a later date.  This is a double whammy to women–both your sense of humor and your sense of mystery work to generate interest.

Genuine cocky comedy

So does this contradict all the emphasis we’ve placed on that all-important, genuine attitude?  Not at all; it’s completely possible to be cocky funny and genuine at the same time.  Being genuine isn’t telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, 100% of the time; it’s about doing what you do well, and honestly.  Putting your best effort into real cocky comedy is genuine.  I can’t stress it enough; real cocky comedy is not about deceit.  Only if you’re actively trying to deceive women are you not being genuine–or cocky funny, for that matter.

It all really boils down to what you’re trying to do in the matter.  If you want the girl to believe you, you’re lying.  If you’re really being cocky funny, you’re creating humor and mystery–maybe stringing her along on a tall tale for awhile, but never with the intention of deceit.  It might seem like kind of a thin line between the two, but just remember that your own intentions are what distinguish a lie from cocky comedy.  If you’re really lying, you risk getting rejected, possibly slapped, and maybe even having your pants catch fire, if you believe the old rhyme.  If your goal is cocky comedy, however, don’t worry; if you practice enough and get your game down, it won’t be mistaken for a lie.
